Cedar Rapids Area
Chamber of Commerce Stories
During the typical year the Chamber plays a critical role in area economic development through a wide variety of programs and initiatives; working to positively impact the economic vitality and enhance the quality of life in the region, while supporting the growth and prosperity of Chamber-member businesses. In the moments prior to and after the 2008 Flood the Chamber took the helm in leading countless initiatives and continues to maintain the charge for economic recovery in the Cedar Rapids area.
Funds to Reopen Businesses
Quickly after the flood hit the Chamber initiated the Job and Small Business Recovery Fund providing a method to donate to flood impacted businesses. As of April 2009 the community has raised and provided over $5.4 million in relief to businesses.
The Chamber also organized business recovery operations for business owners to recover items critical to business continuity immediately following the flood.
Perfect Storm
The 700 businesses impacted as a result of the 2008 floods are also suffering from the economic downturn. While many of the 700 have waded through the waters and red tape to reopen, others have gone out of business, some are in limbo awaiting funds to reopen and a few cannot be reached. Of those that have reopened the business community is cautiously optimistic because other disasters have proven that within two years 51% of reopened businesses close due to economic hardship and lack of sustainability.
